Northwoods Petroleum Museum

The Northwoods Petroleum Museum houses a collection of over 3,000 items pertaining to the petroleum industry as seen through the eyes of the end retailer, the gas station operator.   The collection was amassed by Ed Jacobsen, operator of the Museum, and a former service station operator.

Ed operated six service stations in the western suburbs of Chicago from 1968 through 2003.  He started his petroleum career while attending Marquette University in Milwaukee and working part time in an ENCO (Now EXXON) station at Hwy 100 & Capitol in Milwaukee.  Upon graduation he accepted a position with ENCO and was transferred to Chicago.

After six years of corporate life Ed realized he would be more productive, and happy, running his own service station.  That worked well and soon Ed had six stations.  In 1976 ENCO pulled out of the Midwest and sold Ed’s stations.  Soon thereafter Ed operated three AMOCO stations and three Shells.   Between 1988 and 2003 Ed divested his station holdings and moved to Three Lakes Wisconsin.  He was not able to get the petroleum industry out of his mind.

Ed had collected thousands of gas station items over a 23 year period and decided to display them in a Museum setting.  The building on hwy 45, just North of Three Lakes, was a perfect setting for his collection.  Purchased in 2005 and remodeled the Museum was opened in July of 2006.  It has since seen over 7,000 visitors from 43 states and 10 foreign countries.
